Fundraising Overview
Galway Hospice Foundation is a registered charity, established in 1986 to provide hospice/palliative care services to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families/carers throughout Galway city and county. There is no charge to patient or family for any of the services provided by the Hospice.
The Galway Hospice depends on the generosity and goodwill of the public to fund the Home Care Service, Day Care Service, Bereavement Support Service and Educational Facility. Combined, these services cost in excess of €1.5 million per annum to provide.

Even though the majority of patients, when given a choice, express a desire to remain at home, this is not always possible. While approximately 70% of patients looked after by the Galway Hospice Home Care Service do remain at home, there are situations where it is not possible.
In order to answer the needs of those patients for whom care in the home is no longer possible the Foundation undertook to fundraise and build Galway Hospice to incorporate a 12-bed Inpatient Unit, a Day Care Unit and an Educational facility. This Centre, which cost €2.6 million to build, was funded totally by the community, corporate, professional, the farming sectors, and through individual donations from far and wide.
The Department of Health & Children, through the HSE West, provides the running costs for the Inpatient Unit only. The Inpatient Unit, which opened in December 1997, is now the Regional Specialist Palliative Care Inpatient Unit for counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
